Turn to food when you're stressed or to escape uncomfortable feelings?
Reward yourself with food?
Eat to fill a void?
Indulge in late-night snacking?
Try different diets but have a hard time sticking to them?
Struggle with cravings for sweets, refined carbs, or salty snacks?
Have episodes of bingeing on comfort foods and then feel guilt or shame?
Feel overwhelmed and struggle to prioritize self-care?
I find that the underlying reasons women struggle with emotional eating are often related to not receiving what we needed in our own childhoods. Food becomes the attachment.
Through my previous work in maternal and child health, I used to teach moms how to nourish and nurture their babies. Now I support women to nourish and nurture themselves.
Many of us weren’t given the tools to manage our feelings so we develop a pattern of escaping them with food. Unfortunately, the foods that we turn to for comfort (cookies, ice cream, pastries, candy, chips, etc.) are full of sugar, white flour, salt, and/or unhealthy fats. Over time this habit can result in excess weight and/or health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, heart disease, depression, anxiety, or other conditions.
Soothing with food only offers temporary comfort. In the long run, we need to learn other strategies for managing stress and unpleasant emotions. We need to find other ways to self-soothe.
I take a holistic approach that focuses on the root causes of your struggles and symptoms. I identify the biochemical factors, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and lifestyle habits that are contributing to your stress, cravings, and health conditions. Together we work on shifting these patterns and addressing the imbalances in your biochemistry. This may include gut, hormonal, nutritional, and other imbalances that can affect both your mind and body.
Healthy habits will only stick by addressing the underlying stress and emotions that often trigger people to turn to unhealthy ways of coping, such as emotional eating. That’s why I use both coaching, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT/Tapping), and other mind-body modalities to support clients to shift toward a healthier relationship with food and with themselves.
You deserve to enjoy more energy, better digestion, reduced cravings, improved mood, a healthy weight, and overall better health.
